What is an Apostille? And When Do You Need One?
An Apostille is an official government certificate issued by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Government of India, that authenticates the origin of a public document. It is a single standardized certificate, recognized across 120+ member countries of the Hague Convention of 1961, which eliminates the need for further embassy or consulate authentication in those countries.
In simpler terms: if you are moving to Germany, France, UK, Australia, USA, or any other Hague Convention country, your Indian documents need an Apostille stamp from the MEA, not embassy attestation. Apostille is the globally accepted alternative to the lengthy multi-step embassy attestation chain.
India joined the Hague Convention on October 14, 2005. Since then, MEA Apostille has been the official and only recognized form of document authentication for all Hague member countries. No embassy visit is required for these countries.
Before the MEA issues an Apostille, your document must first be authenticated at the state level, HRD for educational documents, Home Department or SDM for personal documents.
